Reverse of the official rule aboveEnter the percentage a form, employer or admission asks for, and this works backwards through the same official rule to the CGPA you need. If the rule cannot be reversed to one exact CGPA (banded rules), it says so instead of guessing.
Convert your cbse cgpa to percentage with the calculator above — CBSE is pre-selected, so just enter your CGPA. This page explains the official rule, where CBSE publishes it, and how to check the number yourself before you use it on any form.
The official CBSE rule
CBSE converts CGPA to percentage with Indicative Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. It applies to: Class 10 CGPA from the CCE grading era. CBSE calls the result an 'indicative' percentage; current Class 10 marksheets show marks directly. The rule is taken from CBSE Examination Circular (2010) – indicative equivalence of Grade Point and percentage of marks ↗ — open that official document and you will find the same formula; we never copy conversion rules from other calculator websites.
Worked example: a CGPA of 8.20 converts to 8.20 × 9.5 = 77.90% (indicative). The calculator shows the substituted equation with every result, together with the rule's scope and a link to the official source, so an employer or admission cell can verify it the same way you can.

Computed with CBSE's official rule above. If the calculator offers a scheme or batch selector, the table follows the default version — check the version note before quoting a figure.
How to convert, step by step
First, take your exact final CGPA from your consolidated grade card, without rounding it. Second, confirm the scheme, ordinance or graduation-year version that governs your batch — if this page's calculator shows a version selector, choose yours. Third, enter the CGPA above and apply the official equation exactly as written. Fourth, when you report the percentage anywhere official, name the rule beside it (for example, “as per CBSE Examination Circular (2010) – indicative equivalence of Grade Point and percentage of marks”) so the figure can be checked. If you still need the CGPA itself, build it from semester SGPAs with the SGPA to CGPA calculator first. The general method is also explained in our guide on how to convert CGPA into percentage.
Good to know
CBSE used CGPA for Class 10 under its Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme, and its own circular defines the equivalence in two lines: subject-wise indicative percentage = 9.5 × the subject's Grade Point, and overall indicative percentage = 9.5 × CGPA. CBSE chose the word 'indicative' deliberately — students within one grade band had different actual marks, so the converted figure is an official estimate, not recovered marks. CBSE has since returned to marks-based Class 10 results, so this page is for older CGPA marksheets and for forms that still ask holders of those marksheets for a percentage.
Mistakes CBSE students should avoid
- Using × 9.5 for a university degree — it is a CBSE Class 10 rule, and almost every university publishes a different one.
- Presenting the indicative percentage as your actual Class 10 marks; if a form allows it, attach the CBSE circular.
- Including the additional 6th subject in the CGPA — CBSE excludes it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the CBSE CGPA to percentage formula?
CBSE uses Indicative Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. It applies to Class 10 CGPA from the CCE grading era. CBSE calls the result an 'indicative' percentage; current Class 10 marksheets show marks directly. The rule comes from CBSE Examination Circular (2010) – indicative equivalence of Grade Point and percentage of marks, linked from this page and from every calculator result.
How do I convert CBSE CGPA to percentage manually?
Take your exact final CGPA and apply the official equation. Example: CGPA 8.20 converts to 8.20 × 9.5 = 77.90% (indicative). The calculator above does the same calculation and shows the substituted formula.
Why does CBSE multiply CGPA by 9.5 and not 10?
CBSE's circular defines the indicative equivalence as 9.5 × CGPA. Because each grade covers a band of marks, the midpoint mapping works out closer to 9.5 than to 10 — a perfect 10 CGPA indicates 95%, not 100%.
Can I use a generic CGPA × 9.5 or × 10 shortcut instead?
Only if it happens to be CBSE's own published rule for your batch. Universities publish different conversions, and a shortcut copied from another university or a school board can misstate your percentage by several points on admission and job forms.
Where can I verify this rule myself?
In the official document linked on this page: CBSE Examination Circular (2010) – indicative equivalence of Grade Point and percentage of marks. If your batch's marksheet prints a different conversion, that printed rule governs your result — tell us through the Contact page and we will update this page with the official source.
