Convert percentage to CGPA

By university rule • Official source linked with every result
No rule is applied until you select a university — we never guess a formula.

Convert percentage to CGPA free online with this percentage to CGPA calculator — use it when a form, scholarship or employer asks for CGPA but your result is stated as a percentage — or the reverse situation, where you are checking what a quoted percentage implies. Pick your university first, because this tool only converts under a rule loaded for that university and refuses to guess for the rest.

Percentage to CGPA formula (the inverse formula)

Where a university rule is linear — Percentage = (CGPA − offset) × multiplier — it can be inverted exactly: CGPA = (percentage / multiplier) + offset. Under VTU's 2015–2018 scheme rule (offset 0.75, multiplier 10), 72.50% becomes 72.50 / 10 + 0.75 = 8.00 CGPA. Under JNTUH's official rule (offset 0.5, multiplier 10), 75.00% becomes 8.00 CGPA. Notice that the same CGPA corresponds to different percentages at the two universities, which is why converting without selecting a university is meaningless. Both rules are the universities' own published conversions, linked from every result so you can check them.

Percentage to CGPA conversion table

Using the official rules — VTU 2015–2018 scheme: CGPA = (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75, and JNTUH: CGPA = (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.5 — the same percentage converts differently:

PercentageVTU (2015–2018) CGPAJNTUH CGPA
50%5.755.50
60%6.756.50
70%7.757.50
80%8.758.50
90%9.759.50

Both columns use the universities' own published rules. Confirm the scheme and regulation year on your grade card before using a converted figure officially.

When this calculator will not give you a number

Two cases genuinely cannot produce a reverse number, and the calculator says so instead of inventing one. SPPU converts CGPA to percentage with banded equations by final grade (Circular 332/2020 ↗), and a banded table cannot be inverted to one exact CGPA — convert forwards from your CGPA instead. Mumbai University repealed formula conversion on 1 January 2026 (official circular ↗), so MU percentages now come from actual semester marks calculated by your college, not from any CGPA formula at all. Every other university in the selector — KTU, JNTUK, SRM, Calcutta and Calicut included — converts in both directions under its official linear rule, linked with the result.

Planning with the result

A converted CGPA is often used for eligibility cut-offs, so treat borderline cases carefully: keep the unrounded value visible, confirm whether the receiving institution wants the university-converted figure or its own equivalence, and never round up across a cut-off on your own authority. If you are instead starting from semester grades, build the CGPA properly with the SGPA to CGPA calculator, or a single semester with the SGPA calculator, and convert forwards with the CGPA to Percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How does this percentage to CGPA calculator work?

Enter your percentage and select your university. If a linear rule is loaded for that university, the calculator inverts it — CGPA = percentage divided by the multiplier, plus the offset — and shows every step.

Can every percentage be converted to CGPA?

Only under a stated university rule. If your university has no rule loaded, this tool shows guidance to check the official notification instead of inventing a conversion.

What percentage gives a 8.00 CGPA under the official rules?

Under VTU's 2015–2018 scheme rule, 72.50% converts back to 8.00 CGPA; under VTU's 2022 scheme rule it takes 80.00%; and under JNTUH's official rule, 75.00% converts back to 8.00. Each rule is published by its university and linked with the result.

What if my result is above 10 CGPA?

The calculator flags it as outside the 10-point scale. That usually means the selected university rule does not govern your percentage, or the percentage was entered under a different marking scheme.

Should I round the CGPA I get here?

Use the 2-decimal display for everyday purposes, but open the exact value before comparing with a cut-off; universities round final CGPAs by their own regulations.

What does percentage to CGPA mean?

Percentage to CGPA means converting a percentage result into a CGPA on your university grading scale. It is only valid under a published university rule, which is why this tool asks you to select your university first.
