How to Calculate Percentage from CGPA
How to calculate percentage from CGPA: formula, step-by-step examples, conversion table and a free university-wise calculator.
Convert CGPA to percentage
By university rule • Official source linked with every resultStudents ask how to calculate percentage from CGPA as if it were one sum, but it is really three small decisions: which CGPA, which university formula, and when to round. This page walks through the arithmetic slowly, with examples you can repeat by hand and a calculator above that does the same steps instantly.
The calculation, step by step
Where your university publishes a linear conversion, the calculation is: Percentage = (CGPA − offset) × multiplier. Step one, subtract the offset. Step two, multiply what remains. That is all — every CGPA to percentage calculation on this site is those two operations with your university's numbers, displayed in full underneath the result.
Worked example you can copy
Your CGPA is 7.85 and you study under JNTUH's official rule (offset 0.5, multiplier 10). Subtract: 7.85 − 0.5 = 7.35. Multiply: 7.35 × 10 = 73.50%. Now the same CGPA under VTU's 2015–2018 scheme rule (offset 0.75): 7.85 − 0.75 = 7.10, and 7.10 × 10 = 71.00%. Learning how to calculate percentage from CGPA therefore starts with learning which rule is yours — the arithmetic is the easy part.
Quick calculation table
| CGPA | VTU 2015–2018 rule | JNTUH official rule |
|---|---|---|
| 6.5 | 57.50% | 60.00% |
| 7.0 | 62.50% | 65.00% |
| 7.5 | 67.50% | 70.00% |
| 8.0 | 72.50% | 75.00% |
| 8.5 | 77.50% | 80.00% |
| 9.0 | 82.50% | 85.00% |
| 9.5 | 87.50% | 90.00% |
Both columns use the universities' own published rules (VTU 2015–2018 schemes; JNTUH R18 clause 11.2), linked from the calculator. VTU 2022-scheme students use CGPA × 10 instead.
Rounding: the silent mark-loser
Calculate first, round last. If your CGPA is 8.46, the VTU 2015–2018 calculation is (8.46 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.10%. Round the CGPA to 8.4 first and you get 76.50% — six-tenths of a mark lost to nothing but early rounding. This calculator keeps the exact value visible next to the rounded one for precisely that reason. And if you do not yet have a CGPA, build it properly with the SGPA to CGPA calculator before calculating any percentage from it.
Using your calculated percentage
Once you can calculate percentage from CGPA confidently, keep a small record beside the result: the CGPA you started from, the university rule you applied, and the date you checked it. Applications rarely ask how you calculated the figure, but cut-off disputes and document-verification queries do happen, and a one-line note turns a stressful reconstruction into a ten-second answer. If the receiving institution publishes its own equivalence instead, use theirs for that application and keep yours for planning.

Frequently asked questions
How to calculate percentage from CGPA?
Take your university formula, subtract its offset from your CGPA, then multiply by its multiplier. For example, with an offset of 0.5 and multiplier of 10, a CGPA of 7.85 gives (7.85 minus 0.5) multiplied by 10, which is 73.50 percent.
What is the formula to calculate percentage from CGPA?
Where a linear university rule applies, Percentage = (CGPA − offset) × multiplier. The offset and multiplier come from your university notification; they are not the same everywhere.
How much percentage is 9 CGPA?
Under VTU's 2015–2018 scheme rule, 9 CGPA is 82.50 percent; under VTU's 2022 scheme rule it is 90.00 percent; under JNTUH's official rule it is 85.00 percent. Your university and scheme decide — each rule is the university's own published conversion, linked with the result.
Should I round my CGPA before calculating the percentage?
No. Calculate with the full CGPA and round only the final percentage. Rounding 8.46 down to 8.4 first can shave around half a mark off the answer.
Why does my calculated percentage differ from my mark sheet?
You may be using another university rule, a different regulation year, or a rounded CGPA. Compare the formula and source shown with your result, then check your university notification or examination cell.
