SRM grading in plain terms

SRM follows a 10-point grading system. Each course has credits based on weekly L-T-P hours; the semester total appears on your SRM grade sheet. Your CGPA aggregates SGPAs, and when semester credit totals differ, weighting by credits is the mathematically honest approach. The calculator offers both modes and explains which you used.

Step-by-step example for SRM

Take Sem 2: 8.30 (22 credits), Sem 3: 8.00 (20 credits), Sem 4: 8.90 (24 credits). Weighted CGPA = (182.6 + 160.0 + 213.6)/66 = 556.2/66 = 8.43. Simple average = 8.40. The result card shows the substituted formula, plus a table of SGPA, credits, SGPA×credits and running CGPA after each semester. Use the “what SGPA do I need next?” box to plan – e.g., targeting 8.60 with 22 next credits shows the exact SGPA needed, or warns when it exceeds 10.

Percentage at SRM – check your regulation

SRM publishes its conversion per regulation on the Controller of Examinations' official Rule of Conversion CGPA into Percentage ↗ page. For the 2018 and 2021 Regulations, the CoE certificates state the final CGPA “is approximately equivalent to CGPA multiplied by 10” — so CGPA 8.43 becomes about 84.30%, which is the rule the calculator applies for SRM. For the 2015 Regulations (2015–2017 batches), SRM instead prints the marks themselves on the transcript and states there is no provision for conversion of CGPA to percentage — use those printed marks. Open the CoE page, match your regulation, and only then quote a converted figure.

Frequently asked questions

How does SRM calculate CGPA?

SRM uses SGPA per semester and CGPA cumulatively on a 10-point scale. Weighted by credits is recommended when credits are listed.

What credits does SRM use?

SRM assigns credits based on lecture/tutorial/practical hours. Use the semester totals from your SRM grade card.

What is the SRM CGPA to percentage formula?

For the 2018 and 2021 Regulations, SRM's Controller of Examinations certificates state the CGPA is approximately equivalent to CGPA × 10. The 2015 Regulations are different: SRM prints marks on the transcript and states there is no provision for converting CGPA to percentage. Check which regulation your batch follows on SRM's official conversion page.

Can this show what SGPA I need next at SRM?

Yes – enter target CGPA and next semester credits in the helper to see required SGPA, including when the target is not reachable.
