CGPA (10-point) to GPA (4.0 scale)

Indicative estimate • Read the notes below

This CGPA to GPA calculator converts a 10-point Indian CGPA into an indicative GPA on the 4.0 scale used in the United States and elsewhere. It is a planning tool for shortlisting universities — read the limits below before putting any converted number on an application.

The indicative conversion

The proportional estimate used here is GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4: 10.0 → 4.00, 9.0 → 3.60, 8.0 → 3.20, 7.0 → 2.80, 6.0 → 2.40, 5.0 → 2.00. It assumes the two scales map linearly, which is simple and transparent — but real admissions conversion is rarely linear, because a 10-point CGPA compresses very different mark profiles into the same number.

Why no converted GPA is official

There is no authority that fixes how an Indian CGPA becomes a 4.0 GPA. Foreign universities variously read your transcript subject-by-subject, apply their own country conversion guide, or require an evaluation from a credential service that does its own conversion. Two honest converters can therefore give different GPAs for the same CGPA. The safe practice: convert only when an application explicitly asks you to, name the method beside the figure, and where an evaluator is named, let the evaluator do it. For the Indian side of your record, keep your percentage straight with the CGPA to Percentage calculator under your university's official rule.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to a 4.0 GPA?

The common proportional estimate is GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4, so 8.25 CGPA gives an indicative 3.30. This calculator applies it and explains why it is only an estimate.

Is the converted GPA official?

No. Universities and credential evaluators abroad convert Indian transcripts using their own methods — some read grades subject-by-subject, some use country conversion guides. Always follow the instructions of the institution or evaluator you are applying through.

Why do some sites give a different GPA for the same CGPA?

Because there is no single official CGPA-to-4.0 conversion. Different conversion tables place the same CGPA in different bands. Treat any converted figure as a planning estimate.

What should I enter on an application that asks for GPA?

Whatever the application instructs. Many explicitly say not to convert, or to convert only through a named evaluator. If conversion is requested with no method named, state the method you used beside the figure.
