Marks to percentage

Free • No signup • Nothing stored

This marks percentage calculator converts marks obtained into a percentage — for one subject, one semester, or a full marksheet. Enter what you scored and the total, and you also get the marks you would need for the common 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% cut-offs on the same total.

The marks to percentage formula

Percentage = (Marks obtained ÷ Total marks) × 100. It is the one conversion that is the same everywhere, because a percentage is defined as a proportion of the total. Where students go wrong is rarely the division — it is what happens next: converting that percentage into a CGPA with a memorised divisor. Boards and universities each publish their own equivalence (CBSE's Class 10 indicative rule divides by 9.5; many universities multiply or offset differently), so continue on the Percentage to CGPA calculator with your institution selected rather than dividing by a number from memory.

Adding up a full marksheet

For an overall percentage across subjects, add every subject's obtained marks into one total and every subject's maximum marks into another, then enter those two numbers here. Weighting each subject equally by its maximum marks is how most boards compute the aggregate; if your board excludes an additional subject or counts best-of-five, follow that rule when you add up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percentage from marks?

Divide marks obtained by total marks and multiply by 100. For example, 432 out of 500 is (432 ÷ 500) × 100 = 86.40%.

How many marks do I need for 60%?

Multiply the total marks by 0.6. On a 500-mark paper that is 300 marks. This calculator shows the marks needed for 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% with every result.

Can I convert this percentage to CGPA?

Only under your university's or board's published rule. Use the Percentage to CGPA calculator and select your university — it converts only where an official rule exists.

Does this work for one subject or all subjects together?

Both. Enter one subject's marks, or add up all subjects and enter the combined obtained and total marks.
